Jezerinac Group provided structural design services for The Greene School, located in West Palm Beach, FL.
The Greene School is an expansion, re-purpose, and renovation of a historic, 1928 car dealership and garage now converted into a private school serving students of all socioeconomic backgrounds that possess exceptional learning potential. The building’s original character included heavy timber, wood planks, and long-span structural steel trusses have been exposed and restored similar to their original state. Our scope of services included removing structures and placing large stairs within those openings, as well as creating natural light wells within the roof structure. Jezerinac Group analyzed and checked the design of all members adjacent to the new openings and any others that are being locally modified by the renovations.
The most distinguishing feature of the project is a three-story multi-platformed stair, gathering space and learning area that was constructed in the central core of the building and is visible from most locations of the facility. This structure was framed with complex network of stacked cross-laminated timber planks, that in some cases were supported by existing heavy timber and new structural steel composite floors. Most of the building’s slab-on-grade was badly deteriorated, and thus was replaced with a pile supported reinforced concrete slab. Jezerinac Group also conducted a Structural Condition Assessment of the property.
