Roger Dean Stadium

Fast turnaround of major league expansion

THE PROJECT:  Roger Dean Stadium is the centerpiece of the St. Louis Cardinals’ and Florida Marlins’ Spring Training Facility in Jupiter. It is also the summer home of Florida State League A Minor League Affiliates, Palm Beach Cardinals and Jupiter Hammerheads.

Improvements to the stadium included the expansion of the street-level team store, the reconfiguration of the right-field berm seating into a terraced dining area called the Bullpen Club, the addition of a retail storage building down the right-field line, and a cantilevered fabric-clad canopy that provides sunshades for most of the stadium’s upper seating areas.

OUR SOLUTION: Jezerinac Group’s scope of work included the entire structural design of these elements. This was an extensive renovation—designed and permitted in under two months from “Notice to Proceed.”

Two of the elements involved integrating new construction with existing, requiring the provisions of the Florida Building Code – Existing Buildings to analyze the extent of building code upgrade required. We worked with the design team and local building authorities to minimize the impact of these requirements on the existing structure. The canopy was analyzed at a multitude of slopes to minimize the lateral effect of wind loads while preserving desired site lines. Further, the canopy structure was tied into the existing precast stadia bents and utilized their reserve capacity to minimize steel tonnage.
